Michael J Fox Receives Standing Ovation At Baftas

Canadian-American actor Michael J Fox received a standing ovation at the EE Bafta film awards, surprising and moving audiences at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

Fox, known for his iconic role in the ‘Back To The Future’ film series, was warmly introduced as a ‘true legend of cinema’ by host David Tennant before presenting the prestigious best film award, ultimately won by Christopher Nolan‘s ‘Oppenheimer‘.

Despite entering the stage in a wheelchair, Fox insisted on standing at the podium, where his presence was met with cheers and tears from both the live audience and viewers at home.

During his heartfelt speech, Fox emphasized the transformative power of cinema, describing films as ‘magic’ that has the ability to ‘change your life’, highlighting the significance of the five nominated films in the category.

The actor’s personal journey with Parkinson’s disease, which he was diagnosed with in the 1990s, has inspired his philanthropic efforts, notably through the establishment of the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in 2000, which has raised over two billion dollars in support of finding a cure for the condition.

Parkinson’s disease, a neurodegenerative condition affecting around 128,000 people in England according to the NHS, has positioned Fox as a beacon of resilience and hope in the face of adversity.
