Microsoft Windows 10 Security Updates

Redmond, Washington – Microsoft has announced that it will provide free access to Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10 users in the European Economic Area (EEA) for an additional year, until October 14, 2026.

This change allows users to receive critical security updates without needing to sync their PC settings to the cloud via a Microsoft account. Microsoft confirmed this in a statement to Windows Central, stating, “In the EEA, we’re making updates to the enrollment process to ensure it meets local expectations and delivers a secure, streamlined experience.”

The decision comes after consumer advocacy groups raised concerns over previous access limitations to the ESU program, which were perceived to benefit Microsoft financially. Euroconsumers has reported that Microsoft will not require users to back up their settings, apps, or credentials to maintain access to the ESU program.

“We are pleased to learn that Microsoft will provide a no-cost Extended Security Updates (ESU) option for Windows 10 consumer users in the EEA,” Euroconsumers stated, highlighting the company’s shift in policy. Users will still be required to authenticate with a Microsoft account, but the process will be simplified.

Microsoft’s extension comes at a crucial time, as many users globally continue to rely on Windows 10. While users in the EEA will benefit from this change, those outside the region will still face conditions for accessing the ESU program, which may require upgrades or transitioning to different operating systems.

The end of support for Windows 10 is scheduled for October 14, 2025, and nearly millions of PCs remain active worldwide. With this free extension now available to EEA users, Microsoft aims to ensure continuous security for its customers.
