Missouri Leaders Push for Expanded School Choice Amid Education Challenges

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Missouri State Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick has expressed strong support for expanding school choice options for students across the state, citing the necessity for educational reforms as classrooms struggle to meet the needs of future generations. In a statement made on Tuesday, Fitzpatrick called for lawmakers to enact Governor Mike Kehoe‘s proposal aimed at enhancing school choice.
Fitzpatrick, writing as both a father and a concerned citizen, highlighted the importance of providing real solutions for Missouri families, especially those facing financial challenges. He emphasized that the current educational landscape does not adequately prepare all students for success, which underscores the need for increased funding and options.
“As State Treasurer, I worked with lawmakers to establish the MO Scholars program, the nation’s first tax credit-funded education savings account initiative,” Fitzpatrick noted. “It has helped over 1,000 students, but with additional funding, we could extend assistance to many more, including those living in poverty.”
Fitzpatrick acknowledged the pivotal role of public schools in education, recalling his own positive experiences. “Public school is important. My mother dedicated her life to teaching in a public school, and my children are enrolled in public school today,” he stated. However, he maintained that public education may not be the best fit for every student in Missouri.
“Some children have special needs or attend failing public schools. Others may not feel safe at their designated institutions,” he continued. He urged support for school choice initiatives that would cater to the unique circumstances of diversely situated students while maintaining a commitment to public education funding.
Fitzpatrick countered the narrative that promotes a divide between public and private schooling. “Let’s trust the parents who know their children best. Empowering parents with choices can lead to improved educational outcomes,” he said, adding that competition among schools will drive innovation and responsiveness to student needs.
In his conclusion, Fitzpatrick affirmed his alignment with Governor Kehoe’s proposal: “It’s time to make meaningful changes and provide school choice for all Missouri families. Our children’s education must be our foremost priority.”
