Multiple Peanut Butter Brands Recalled Over Safety Concerns

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued an alert, warning consumers about multiple peanut butter brands being recalled due to safety concerns. This action comes after a series of recalls initiated by various retailers following the discovery of higher-than-acceptable levels of Aflatoxin in certain products.

Brands such as Black Cat and Yum Yum have reassured customers of the safety of their products amid the recalls. The NCC has called for urgent testing of all peanut butter brands to ensure consumer safety, specifically targeting products from House of Natural Butters.

RCL Foods, a food producer under the control of Johann Rupert‘s Remgro and the owner of Yum Yum, stated that they have strict safety protocols in place to maintain the quality of their products. The company conducts constant monitoring of Aflatoxin levels in its peanuts and peanut butter production and works with accredited laboratories for verification.

Tiger Brands, the producer of Black Cat peanut butter, emphasized the rigorous safety and quality assurance measures implemented in their production process. All raw materials and finished products undergo extensive testing to meet high safety standards and are rejected if they fail to comply.

Additional brands like PnP Peanut Butter from RCL Foods, Shoprite’s private label peanut butter, and products from Woolworths have also been confirmed as safe for consumption following independent testing for Aflatoxin levels. The NCC has expanded its recall list to include more brands produced by House of Natural Butters, urging consumers to return the affected products immediately.

In response to the situation, the Acting National Consumer Commissioner, Thezi Mabuza, emphasized the importance of manufacturers, distributors, and suppliers conducting thorough tests to ensure the safety of peanut butter products on the market. The investigation into House of Natural Butters is ongoing to determine the extent of the issue.
