National Teacher Appreciation Week Honors Educators Across the U.S.

AUSTIN, Texas — National Teacher Appreciation Week runs from May 5 to May 9, 2023, honoring educators for their hard work and dedication to students. The week culminates in National Teacher Day on May 6.
According to a survey conducted by a financial services company, 73% of parents rated their children’s teachers as excellent or good, an increase from 71% in 2018. However, 77% of teachers reported feeling frequently stressed, while 30% said they do not feel appreciated.
National Teacher Appreciation Week traces its origins to the National Parent Teacher Association in 1984, which designated a week in May to recognize teachers. Former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt played a significant role in establishing Teacher Day by lobbying Congress in 1953.
Many businesses are showing their appreciation for teachers through special offers. For instance, Chipotle is offering 100,000 teachers the chance to win a free burrito from May 5 to May 13. Teachers can obtain this by verifying their employment status.
Restaurants like Buffalo Wild Wings and Happy Joe's are also offering discounts. Teachers at participating locations can receive 20% off their bills while showing a valid school ID. Others, such as Whataburger, are providing free menu items during specified dates.
In addition, numerous retailers, including Staples, are providing discounts to teachers during this week. Staples is offering a free 12-pack of Tru Red Stick Pens with a valid school ID.
The aim of these initiatives is not just to thank teachers but to also raise awareness about the challenges they face in the education sector. “It is quite impossible to give teachers monetary compensation alone that will repay for their devotion to the job,” a representative said.
Overall, National Teacher Appreciation Week serves as a reminder to acknowledge the vital role educators play in shaping future generations.
