Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services has announced that it will be offering a series of Pap clinics throughout the province in the coming weeks. These clinics will be available in both the Central and Eastern Zones. The specific dates for these clinics have been listed, and more dates are expected to be announced soon.

All appointments will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Importantly, individuals do not need a referral from a primary care provider to book an appointment. The clinics are accessible to everyone, emphasizing the significance of regular Pap tests in cancer prevention.

The Pap test is a simple and effective procedure aimed at preventing cervical cancer. The Canadian Cancer Society recommends that individuals with a cervix who are sexually active begin regular Pap testing by the age of 21. It is vital for patients to ensure they schedule regular Pap tests and follow-up appointments, as these tests can detect cell changes before cancer develops, thus enabling timely treatment.

It is noted that following Pap testing, approximately one in ten individuals may receive an abnormal result. Those with abnormal results will be contacted by a healthcare provider to discuss the appropriate next steps.

Additionally, individuals wishing to book a Pap test at any time of the year can do so by contacting their primary healthcare provider or by using the province-wide contact numbers available on the NL Health Services website.
