Newly Appointed Provincial Minister of Health and Wellness Embarks on Listening and Learning Programme
The recently appointed Provincial Minister of Health and Wellness, Mireille Wenger, has initiated a ‘Listening and Learning’ initiative, commencing her visits to health facilities across the Western Cape region. Her first stops included the notable Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, Groote Schuur Hospital, the Bellville Health Park, and Tygerberg Hospital.
In her address, Minister Wenger expressed deep admiration for the health workers, acknowledging the dedication of over 33,000 staff members who tirelessly work to provide quality healthcare services to the residents of the Western Cape. She emphasized the importance of engaging with and learning from the frontline healthcare workers to enhance service delivery and support them in delivering optimal care.
Minister Wenger, with a background in the health sector and experience serving on the Western Cape Provincial Parliament’s Health and Wellness Standing Committee, highlighted the impact of budget constraints on the healthcare system due to national fiscal challenges. She stressed the need for collaborative efforts with the private sector and other government levels to ensure sustainable service provision and equitable healthcare.
Looking ahead, the Minister expressed enthusiasm about engaging with stakeholders across the healthcare ecosystem to gain insights into operational strengths and areas needing improvement. She eagerly anticipated gathering innovative ideas on enhancing healthcare delivery, particularly for vulnerable populations, to promote health and well-being at all life stages.
