Nikki Haley Secures First Primary Win Over Trump in Symbolic Victory
U.S. presidential hopeful Nikki Haley achieved her first primary victory in the Washington, D.C., Republican primary, marking a significant milestone in her campaign. The win, confirmed by Edison Research, stands as a symbolic triumph for the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
Haley, the last challenger against Donald Trump in the race, garnered a substantial 62.9 per cent of the vote, surpassing the former president’s 33.2 per cent. Campaign spokesperson Olivia Perez-Cubas highlighted the rejection of Trump’s chaotic approach by Republicans closer to the Washington dysfunction.
This historic win made Haley the first woman ever to secure a Republican primary victory in U.S. history, a notable feat for her campaign. However, despite this success, her path to clinching the Republican nomination and facing off against likely Democratic nominee President Joe Biden remains a formidable challenge.
Trump, who had previously triumphed in the first eight nominating contests, notably lost to Haley in Washington, D.C., hinting at a shift in dynamics. The current polls predict Trump’s likelihood of winning most future nominating contests, underscoring the significance of Haley’s victory in the capital.
On the eve of Super Tuesday, where 874 Republican delegates will be at stake across 15 states and one U.S. territory, Haley’s win may help dispel criticisms of her inability to secure a single nominating contest victory. Despite potential reservations from some Republicans towards her popularity in Washington, the win reinforces her campaign’s resilience.
