Oklahoma Schools Cancel Classes Ahead of Severe Winter Storm
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Schools across Oklahoma have canceled classes or shifted to remote learning on Friday, January 10, 2025, as a severe winter storm approaches the region. The decision comes amid forecasts of heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures, and hazardous road conditions.
Multiple school districts, including Oklahoma City Public Schools, Tulsa Public Schools, and Edmond Public Schools, announced closures early Friday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a winter storm warning for much of the state, predicting up to 8 inches of snow in some areas and wind chills dropping below zero degrees Fahrenheit.
“The safety of our students and staff is our top priority,” said Dr. Sean McDaniel, Superintendent of Oklahoma City Public Schools. “With the potential for dangerous travel conditions, we believe it is in the best interest of everyone to cancel in-person classes and allow families to prepare for the storm.”
Remote learning options were made available for some districts, while others opted for a full closure. Parents were advised to check their district’s website or social media channels for updates. The Oklahoma State Department of Education also provided resources for schools transitioning to virtual instruction.
Local authorities urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to prepare for power outages. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation reported that crews were pre-treating roads with salt and sand to mitigate icy conditions. “We are closely monitoring the storm and will continue to work around the clock to keep roads as safe as possible,” said a spokesperson for the department.
This marks the second major winter storm to impact Oklahoma this season, following a similar event in December 2024 that caused widespread disruptions. Meteorologists warn that the current system could be more severe, with prolonged freezing temperatures expected to last through the weekend.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated on weather alerts and to follow safety guidelines issued by local officials. The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management has activated its emergency operations center to coordinate response efforts.
