Oklahoma Schools Shift to Remote Learning Amid Winter Storm
Multiple school districts across Oklahoma canceled classes or shifted to remote learning on Friday, January 10, 2025, as a winter storm brought heavy snowfall and hazardous conditions to the state. The decision impacts thousands of students in urban and rural areas, with some districts opting for traditional snow days while others transitioned to virtual instruction.
Oklahoma City Public Schools announced late Thursday that all classes, athletic events, and activities for Friday would be canceled. Edmond Public Schools, Yukon Public Schools, and Mustang Public Schools, which remained open on Thursday, canceled after-school activities and moved to remote learning for Friday. Other districts, including Norman Public Schools, Putnam City Schools, and Stillwater Public Schools, closed entirely.
Rural districts such as Ada Public Schools, Seminole Public Schools, and Madill Public Schools also announced closures. Snow began falling Thursday morning, accumulating up to 3 inches in some areas, with the storm expected to clear by Friday morning.
“We prioritize the safety of our students and staff,” said a spokesperson for Oklahoma City Public Schools. “The decision to close or move to remote learning is made after careful consideration of weather conditions and road safety.”
Parents were advised to check district websites and social media for updates. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel as crews worked to clear roads.
This marks the first significant winter weather event of 2025 in Oklahoma, with temperatures expected to remain below freezing through the weekend. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for much of the state, warning of icy roads and reduced visibility.
