David Robertson Phillies Signing Mlb

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Philadelphia Phillies have signed veteran reliever David Robertson for the remainder of the 2025 season as they address ongoing bullpen issues ahead of the July 31 trade deadline.

Robertson, 40, was without a team for the entire season until this signing, having last pitched in the majors on September 29, 2024. Reports indicate that he agreed to a deal worth $16 million, prorated to approximately $6 million for the remainder of the year.

In his last full season, Robertson played for the Texas Rangers, posting a 3.00 ERA and striking out 99 batters in 72 innings. With the Phillies currently ranked 23rd in the majors with a 4.36 relief pitching ERA, the addition of Robertson comes as they also deal with the suspension of late-inning lefty José Alvarado.

As the trade deadline approaches, questions arise about whether the Phillies will be sellers. Their disappointing 2025 season has not met expectations, prompting speculation about potential trades. The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox are reportedly looking at similar trade targets within the Arizona Diamondbacks, searching for starting pitchers.

Both rival teams have sent scouts to Phoenix. They are particularly interested in Diamondbacks pitchers, including Merrill Kelly, who has been impressive this season.

Meanwhile, with the Atlanta Braves underperforming, they are contemplating trades for veterans but are not expected to undergo a complete overhaul. Reports suggest they may listen to offers for select players but likely won’t make significant moves.

As the deadline nears, many other teams are evaluating their positions, with several sellers expected to emerge as the market begins to take shape. The Phillies will keep an eye on their areas of need, looking for more bullpen depth in addition to the newly signed Robertson.

All eyes are on MLB as teams gear up for the final days before the trade deadline, with much still to unfold.
