Priscilla Hon is set to debut in the WTA top 100 following her impressive victory at the China Open. The 27-year-old Australian rallied to win her first round match against Viktorija Golubic, securing a 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) triumph on Wednesday.
Hon faced a tough battle but showed resilience, coming back from a first-set defeat and trailing 4-1 in the final tiebreak. The Queensland player clinched the match by winning six straight points against Golubic, ranked No. 70 in the world. This significant win marks Hon’s first at a WTA 1000 event, likely moving her up to No. 97 in the provisional rankings.
Even if Hon does not progress further in the tournament, she could still join four other Australian women in the top 100: Daria Kasatkina, Maya Joint, Kimberly Birrell, and Ajla Tomljanovic.
This year has been remarkable for Hon, highlighted by her qualifications for Wimbledon and the US Open. At the US Open, she achieved her biggest career win over No. 17 seed Liudmila Samsonova in the third round.
Hon, born to Chinese parents who immigrated from Hong Kong, has excelled in Asia, winning nine out of her 15 Tour-level matches on the continent.
In other first-round matches at the China Open, Maddison Inglis was eliminated after a close 7-5, 7-6(7) loss to Russia’s Polina Kudermetova, and Birrell fell 6-3, 7-6(1) to Latvian Anastasija Sevastova.
