Professor Mosa Moshabela Named UCT’s New Vice-Chancellor

The University of Cape Town (UCT) has appointed Professor Mosa Moshabela as its 11th Vice-Chancellor, succeeding Professor Daya Reddy. The decision culminated from an extensive selection process.

Currently the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Moshabela is a renowned academic and clinician scientist with vast experience in health research and leadership roles.

His accolades include receiving the PHILA Annual Award in 2022 and a Ministerial Special COVID-19 Award in 2020–2021 for outstanding contributions to public health.

Professor Moshabela’s expertise spans various domains, from health innovations to research ethics, making him a distinguished figure in academia.

Having served on boards like the National Research Foundation and the South African Medical Research Council, he brings a wealth of strategic leadership to UCT.

His focus on healthcare improvement and combating infectious diseases defines his research philosophy and resonates with UCT’s commitment to social impact.

The UCT Council, led by Norman Arendse SC, expressed confidence in Professor Moshabela’s visionary leadership, expecting him to steer UCT towards its strategic goals.

Professor Moshabela’s tenure, starting on 1st October, marks a new chapter for UCT, one driven by innovation, inclusivity, and academic excellence.

As the university transitions to a new era under Professor Moshabela’s guidance, the UCT community anticipates exciting developments and impactful initiatives that will shape the institution’s future.
