Renowned Journalist Sagarika Ghose Nominated For Rajya Sabha By Trinamool Congress

Renowned journalist, Sagarika Ghose, has been nominated as a candidate for the Rajya Sabha by the Trinamool Congress in a recent announcement.

Joining Ghose in the nomination are Sushmita Dev, former president of the Congress women’s wing, Dalit Matua community leader Mamata Bala Thakur, and sitting Rajya Sabha member Nadimul Haque.

Sushmita Dev, daughter of the former Union minister Santosh Mohan Dev, had previously served as a Lok Sabha member and was sent to the Rajya Sabha by the TMC in 2021.

The Trinamool Congress controls 14 out of the 16 Rajya Sabha seats from West Bengal, with elections for 56 Rajya Sabha seats across 15 states scheduled for February 27.

The announcement comes as the term of five Rajya Sabha members from Bengal, including TMC’s Nadimul Haque, Subhashis Chakraborty, Abir Biswas, and Dr. Santanu Sen, is set to end in April, along with Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi’s term.

With the BJP holding 75 seats in the Bengal legislative assembly, the race for the fifth vacant seat from Bengal is set to be competitive.

Bengal BJP’s chief spokesperson, Samik Bhattacharya, stated that any decision regarding fielding a candidate would be decided by the central leadership.
