Rick Moranis Spaceballs 2

LOS ANGELES, CA — Actor Rick Moranis is back in action, returning to live-action acting in the upcoming sequel, “Spaceballs 2.” The film will be a follow-up to the 1987 sci-fi spoof, “Spaceballs,” and Moranis will reprise his iconic role as Lord Dark Helmet.

Joining Moranis are original cast members Bill Pullman as Lone Starr, Mel Brooks as the legendary Yogurt, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, and George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz. New faces in the goofy outer space adventure include Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan.

Amazon MGM has confirmed the entire cast as production gets underway. The studio released a behind-the-scenes photo showcasing the stars, writers, and director during a table read. “Spaceballs 2” is slated to hit theaters in 2027.

Josh Greenbaum, known for works like “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” will direct the film. The screenplay is co-written by Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez. Details about the film’s title and plot remain closely guarded, but Amazon MGM hinted that the title is still under wraps, along with information about the story.

A leaked logline humorously describes the movie as a “non-prequel non-reboot sequel part two but with reboot elements franchise expansion film.” Like its predecessor, “Spaceballs 2” is expected to parody beloved sci-fi franchises such as “Star Wars,” “Star Trek,” and “Alien.”

Moranis, widely recognized for his comedic roles in films like “Ghostbusters” and “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,” had previously stepped away from acting following the death of his wife, Ann Belsky, from cancer in 1991. His comeback to the screen was initially set for a 2020 sequel to “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,” but production was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This will mark his first film role since 1997.

Comedy legend Mel Brooks, now 99, directed and co-wrote the original “Spaceballs,” which grossed $38 million. He returns as a producer for the sequel, alongside Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Jeb Brody from Imagine Entertainment.
