Secretary of State Rubio to Strengthen Ties During Caribbean Visit

WASHINGTON, March 24, 2025 — U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will embark on a trip to Jamaica, Guyana, and Suriname on March 26-27 to bolster bilateral relations and address pressing issues such as illegal immigration and crime, according to a State Department spokesperson.
The visit aims to strengthen cooperation between the U.S. and Caribbean nations, as well as to further President Trump’s foreign policy objectives in the region. During this two-day trip, Rubio is scheduled to engage with Caribbean leaders, focusing on enhancing economic partnerships and addressing security challenges.
In Jamaica, Rubio will engage in discussions with heads of state from notable Caribbean countries, including Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and Haiti. The discussions will cover a range of significant topics, including strategies to combat transnational organized crime and initiatives to reduce illegal immigration.
The State Department emphasized that these engagements are essential for fostering regional cooperation, particularly regarding Haiti’s ongoing political and security crisis. Secretary Rubio’s visit comes at a crucial time, as the U.S. seeks to work collaboratively with Caribbean nations to address the complex web of challenges facing the region.
“Strengthening our economic partnerships with Caribbean countries is pivotal to advancing mutual interests and ensuring regional stability,” the spokesperson highlighted. The upcoming dialogues underscore the U.S. commitment to fostering a secure and prosperous Caribbean.
Rubio’s travel is part of a broader initiative by the Biden administration to deepen relationships in Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean, to promote stability. By prioritizing these engagements, the U.S. aims to create lasting partnerships in a region that is vital to its national interests.
