Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe representing Abia south senatorial district has disclosed that Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is willing to comply with any conditions that could lead to his release from custody.

Abaribe made this revelation during a press briefing after a meeting with Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney-General of the Federation, alongside other senators from the south-east geopolitical region.

Nnamdi Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in Kenya and extradition to Nigeria in 2021.

Abaribe expressed concerns over the prolonged detention of Kanu, stating that criminals in the south-east have capitalized on his absence to engage in unlawful activities in his name.

Speaking further, Abaribe mentioned that he had a personal meeting with Kanu on behalf of the south-east caucus and conveyed Kanu’s willingness to adhere to any terms that could facilitate his early release.

He added that the Attorney-General received their plea cordially, promising to deliberate on the matter and present it to the President for a final decision, emphasizing that a legal resolution alone may not suffice in this case.

Notably, the governors of the south-east region had recently held discussions to mediate with President Bola Tinubu concerning Kanu’s release.

Nnamdi Kanu is facing a seven-count charge of treasonable felony at the Federal High Court in Abuja, with the court revoking his bail in the past due to non-compliance.

Abaribe had stood as one of Kanu’s sureties during his initial trial before Kanu went underground following a military raid on his residence.

In a related development, the Court of Appeal nullified seven out of the fifteen counts in Kanu’s charge in April 2022, leading to a subsequent appeal by the Federal Government which resulted in a stay of execution on the court’s verdict discharging Kanu.

Despite the legal back and forth, Kanu’s willingness to meet conditions for release signals a potential breakthrough in the protracted case that has captured national attention.
