Southern California Shaken by 5.2-Magnitude Earthquake
A 5.2-magnitude earthquake rattled Southern California on Tuesday night, sending shudders through a wide area including Los Angeles. The quake hit near Lamont, California, which is about 25 miles south of Bakersfield, around 9:09 p.m. PT.
The US Geological Survey initially reported the earthquake as a 5.3 magnitude but later downgraded it to 5.2. The quake struck at a depth of 6 miles, making it a shallow earthquake, which often results in a wider area feeling the tremors.
Following the main quake, the area experienced at least 30 aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 4.5. Residents in places like Camarillo and Canyon Country felt shaking, and reports came in from as far away as San Diego and Orange.
Fortunately, no significant damage or injuries have been reported. The city’s fire department in Los Angeles sent teams to check for any impacts but found none. The US Geological Survey estimated a low likelihood of casualties or damage from this earthquake.
