Danny Trejo Family Weekend Southern Illinois University

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois University Carbondale is set to host its Family Weekend 2025 from Oct. 2 to 5, featuring actor and activist Danny Trejo among various activities.

“Family Weekend is the first big event of the semester where we formally welcome our Saluki families to campus to showcase our Saluki Spirit,” said Jennifer Phillips, director of the event. She expressed excitement about seeing families reconnect with their students and participate in campus activities.

Trejo will speak at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 2 in Shryock Auditorium. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and a limited number of attendees will be chosen at random for a meet-and-greet with Trejo following his talk.

Trejo’s journey to success began with challenges, including time spent in prison, where he became a champion boxer. He overcame addiction through a 12-step program and has been sober for over 50 years. Now, he dedicates his life to helping others as an intervention counselor and has a rich film career featuring roles in various movies and TV shows.

Another highlight of Family Weekend is the return of the Taste of Carbondale event on Oct. 2 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Morris Library’s north lawn. Co-sponsored by the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, the event offers complimentary samples from multiple local restaurants.

The weekend also includes arts and crafts sales, workshops, and a free outdoor movie night featuring “Spy Kids” at Itchy Jones Stadium, as well as a football game against Indiana State University. The Saluki Family Tailgate, preceding the game, will take place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 4.

Family Weekend promises non-stop activities for all ages, showcasing the vibrant Saluki community.
