EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern University announced that acclaimed actor Steve Carell will serve as the commencement speaker for its 167th annual ceremony, scheduled for June 15 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Center in Chicago. Carell, recognized for his work in hit films and television shows, is also a parent to two current Northwestern students.
Carell, known for his roles in “The Office,” “The Morning Show,” and films such as “Bruce Almighty” and “Crazy, Stupid Love,” expressed his excitement about the upcoming speech. “I’m thrilled to be speaking at Northwestern’s commencement this year,” Carell said. “My speech’s theme will be ‘The Importance of Lowering Expectations,’ which for these graduates should start with my speech.”
Alongside his keynote address, Carell will receive an honorary degree of Doctor of Arts during the ceremony. The complete list of honorary degree recipients will be revealed in the coming days, as noted in the university’s Thursday press release.
University President Michael Schill praised Carell’s versatility as an entertainer. “Steve Carell is an absolute treasure, and I am thrilled he will be our commencement speaker,” Schill said. “He brings humor and humanity to every role, from ‘The Office’ to ‘The Morning Show’ and his recent work on Broadway. I cannot wait to hear him address our Class of 2025.”
Carell’s connections to Northwestern extend into his family, with his daughter Annie a graduate of the School of Communication in 2023, and his son Johnny currently studying within the same school. The actor’s engagement with the university further reflects his personal ties to the institution.
Beginning his career in Chicago at the renowned Second City, Carell’s journey in comedy eventually led him to notable television roles, including a six-year stint on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.” He gained significant recognition in 2004 for his lead role as Michael Scott in NBC’s “The Office,” alongside his 2005 breakout film “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.” This combination of successes has established Carell as a prominent figure in both television and film.
Throughout his extensive career, Carell has accumulated various accolades, including nominations for Academy Awards, Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. His recent projects include a notable performance in Apple TV’s “The Morning Show,” where he received acclaim and award nominations. Carell also made his Broadway debut in 2024, earning a Drama League nomination for his role in “Uncle Vanya.”
