Tenor Health Foundation Hospital Acquisition

PITTSTON, PA — Tenor Health Foundation has signed a definitive agreement to acquire three hospitals and associated clinics in Northeast Pennsylvania. The deal, announced Friday, involves Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, Regional Hospital of Scranton, and Moses Taylor Hospital.

The acquisition is expected to be finalized by the end of this year, pending regulatory review and final funding arrangements, according to U.S. Rep. Rob Bresnahan. Commonwealth Health System officials stated that the price of the sale has not been disclosed.

Radha A. Savitala, CEO of Tenor Health Foundation, expressed excitement over the agreement, stating, “This acquisition exemplifies our organization’s commitment to preserve valuable healthcare resources in the most vulnerable communities.”

Commonwealth Health is currently owned by Tennessee-based Community Health Systems Inc. The hospitals have a combined total of 677 beds, critical for healthcare services in the region. The deal comes after a period of searching for new ownership following financial challenges faced by the facilities.

Last year, Community Health Systems consolidated emergency rooms at the Scranton facilities, closing operations at Moses Taylor’s ER. The acquisition aims to enhance the stability and operation of these important healthcare institutions.

Several local foundations have committed their support to this acquisition. Charlie Lyons, spokesperson for the supporting organizations, mentioned the groups are “encouraged” by the agreement and have invested millions to keep the hospitals operational amid the sale process.

“These hospitals are essential to Scranton and the broader region, not only as providers of critical health services but as major employers,” commented Rep. Bresnahan.

Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti also indicated her cautious optimism regarding the sale, emphasizing the need for healthcare accessibility in the region. “We will do what we can to support Tenor as they seek the licenses and financing they need to maintain and improve the hospitals,” she said.
