Texas Thanksgiving Weather Forecast

San Antonio, Texas — As millions of Texans prepare for Thanksgiving travel, the weather is shaping up to be a mix of cool temperatures and rain. Meteorologists predict that a cold front will bring scattered showers and potential thunderstorms starting Monday, which may impact travel plans.

Thanksgiving Day itself looks to embody fall weather, with temperatures in the 30s and 40s in the morning, rising to the mid-60s under mostly sunny skies. Dry conditions are expected, providing a welcome relief for outdoor holiday festivities, although patchy freezes may occur in outlying areas.

The upcoming weeks will see an anomaly in temperatures across Texas, with highs cooling into the 60s and 70s for much of the state as a stronger cold front is projected to hit the Panhandle by Tuesday. Areas near Dalhart and Amarillo may see highs drop into the 40s.

Travelers should be cautious, as disruptive weather is likely on the weekend prior to Thanksgiving. An upper-level storm system will trigger rain and possible thunderstorms from Sunday into Monday, adversely affecting travel in areas from San Angelo and Abilene to Dallas and Austin, where localized flooding is a possibility.

“We are watching the possibility of heavy rain and localized flash flooding this Sunday and Monday,” said KSAT meteorologist Shelby Ebertowski. “The heaviest rainfall will be concentrated in the northern regions of the state, and travelers flying into major airports may encounter delays.”

A projected 5.8 million Texans are expected to journey for the holiday, marking a record increase over the previous year. With about 90% choosing to drive, travelers are advised to stay informed regarding weather changes that could complicate their trips.

For those flying out of Texas, it is essential to monitor conditions not just in the state but across the country, as snow and inclement weather may affect flights in several travel corridors nationwide.

As Thanksgiving approaches, forecasters will continue to issue updates on the evolving weather patterns. Safe travels are encouraged as Texans prepare for holidays filled with family, food, and festivities.
