Tropical Storm Ernesto Heads for Maritimes
Tropical Storm Ernesto is currently gathering strength as it moves northeast of Puerto Rico and is expected to turn north toward the Maritimes.
CBC meteorologist Tina Simpkin explains that while this forecast is quite early and could change, Ernesto is likely to brush against Nova Scotia‘s coastline. This would mean P.E.I. could face some strong winds and heavy rain.
This is the first time this year we see a storm track that could affect our region, so it’s essential to stay alert.
The Canadian Hurricane Centre is predicting that Ernesto will be just south of Nova Scotia late Sunday evening. However, they haven’t made any predictions beyond that point yet.
As it stands now, if Ernesto impacts the area, the major effects are expected on Monday.
The storm is projected to reach its peak as a Category 3 hurricane while moving north. As it approaches the cooler waters of Canada’s east coast, Ernesto’s strength is expected to decline, but it will still likely be a significant storm when it hits the Maritimes.
According to Simpkin, it’s wise to prepare for the storm even though it’s too early for people to panic.
