Tulane University Names 2025 Stephen Martin Scholars

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University Athletics announced today that seniors Alyssa Dismuke and Zander Dunbar are the 2025 recipients of the Stephen Martin Scholars honor. This award recognizes individuals who exemplify character, leadership, and a commitment to community service, reflecting the legacy of Stephen Martin, who broke the color barrier in the Southeastern Conference by playing baseball for Tulane in 1965.
“We are delighted to honor Alyssa and Zander as this year’s Stephen Martin Scholars,” said Ben Weiner, Tulane’s Director of Athletics. “Their dedication to leadership and community engagement reflects the core values that Mr. Martin exemplified through his impactful contributions. We are proud to have them serve as shining representatives of the Green Wave.”
Dismuke, from Bastrop, LA, is a Political Science major and a thrower on Tulane’s Track and Field team. Balancing her studies and athletics, she actively contributes to both the campus community and the wider New Orleans area. As President of emPOWERed, a student-athlete focus group, she advocates for her peers while leading various community service projects.
In addition to her athletic commitments, Dismuke interns with the Center for Public Service, focusing on community outreach initiatives. She also works as a Community Engagement Advocate, developing leadership skills among fellow students. Her involvement includes organizing school supply drives and participating in various outreach programs.
Dunbar, from New Orleans, is majoring in Political Science and Sociology and is a Posse Foundation Scholar. He has demonstrated academic success and athletic achievement, including a victory in the 800 meters at the 2024 American Outdoor Championships. Dunbar is also a member of the emPOWERed group and has set a school record in the indoor 800-meter event.
Deeply rooted in his community, Dunbar mentors local youth through Son of a Saint and actively volunteers with several nonprofits, enhancing leadership development for young people. He participates in campus service events, including Tulane’s MLK Day of Service.
Dismuke and Dunbar will be recognized at Thursday’s football game against East Carolina in Yulman Stadium. In a joint statement, they expressed pride in being honored as Stephen Martin Scholars, stating, “This recognition is a tremendous honor, and we are proud to contribute to Stephen Martin’s inspiring legacy.”
Stephen Martin and his wife, Brigid Cheri Martin, were married for 43 years and had three children, with Stephen Jr. and Dana earning degrees from Tulane as well. Born on November 2, 1946, Martin earned his bachelor’s degree in Latin from Tulane in 1968, followed by an MBA in 1973. He served in the United States Army and retired as the Chief Financial Officer for Tuskegee University in 2012.
