Tulsa Public Schools Winter Weather Preparations 2025

TULSA, Okla. – Students at Tulsa Public Schools (TPS) returned from winter break on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, as the district emphasized winter weather readiness and upcoming events like the Enrollment Expo. Superintendent Dr. Ebony Johnson addressed concerns about cold weather, school safety, and new state education proposals in an interview with News On 6.

Dr. Johnson reassured families about the district’s winter weather preparations, stating, ‘We encourage families to send their children to school. It may be chilly, but we have heat in all our schools.’ She highlighted the efforts of TPS staff, including bus drivers and maintenance crews, to ensure safe transportation and warm facilities. ‘Our bus drivers are truly heroes,’ she added, urging parents to bundle children in heavy coats, hats, and gloves.

The district is also preparing for its annual Enrollment Expo, scheduled for Saturday, January 11, 2025, at the University of Tulsa‘s Allen Chapman Student Union. The event, running from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., will offer on-site enrollment support, free lunch, and a Kids Zone for children ages 3-8. Families can also explore job opportunities with TPS, including teaching and support staff positions.

Dr. Johnson also addressed proposed rule changes from State Superintendent Ryan Walters, which include tracking illegal immigration and requiring teachers to pass a U.S. naturalization test. ‘We’re committed to following the law and supporting our students, families, and teachers,’ she said. Additionally, she discussed new state standards aimed at enhancing workforce readiness, emphasizing TPS’s focus on helping students develop post-secondary plans.

As winter weather continues, TPS has outlined its inclement weather policy, promising to notify families of school closures or delays by 5 a.m. on the affected day. The district consults with the Tulsa Area Emergency Management Agency to make decisions prioritizing student and staff safety.
