Two Belton ISD Students Named National Merit Finalists

BELTON, Texas — Two Belton ISD students have been named finalists in the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program. Seniors Steven Melo Arantes and David Shelburne, both enrolled at Belton High School, earned this recognition after submitting applications detailing their academic achievements, school and community involvement, leadership qualities, and notable awards, according to a district press release.
Arantes and Shelburne were previously designated as semifinalists after their impressive scores on the Preliminary SAT test taken during their junior year, placing them in the top 1% among more than 1.5 million test-takers nationwide.
“Steven Melo Arantes and David Shelburne exemplify the academic excellence we strive for in Belton ISD,” said Belton ISD Superintendent Malinda Golden in the news release. “Their hard work and dedication are truly commendable, and we are proud to celebrate this achievement with them.”
Belton High School Principal Claudia Knox echoed Golden’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of involvement in extracurricular activities alongside academic success. “Their achievement shows that involvement in extracurriculars and academic excellence go hand in hand,” she said. “With resources like Tiger Time tutoring, study groups, and clubs, our staff supports students in reaching their full potential.”
Arantes expressed his excitement at being recognized among such a distinguished group. “Being named a National Merit Finalist is truly rewarding,” he said. “The process — from preparing for the PSAT to writing college essays — was challenging but helped me grow. My advice to younger students is to start early, stay consistent, and apply yourself in every class.”
Shelburne reflected on the countless hours he devoted to studying, particularly over the summer, as preparation for the PSAT. “It feels great to see my hard work pay off,” Shelburne noted. “My family has been incredibly supportive, and this recognition opens doors to scholarship opportunities.”
A total of 15,000 high school students across the nation have been designated as finalists for the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program; however, only around 7,500 will ultimately receive a scholarship. Three types of scholarships will be awarded from March to mid-June, including National Merit Scholarship awards, corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards, and college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards.
