Truman Scholar Announcement Ceremony

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Greyson Orne, a junior at the University of North Dakota (UND), has been named a 2025 Truman Scholar, one of only 54 students selected nationwide for the prestigious honor.

The Truman Scholarship, established by Congress in 1975, provides $30,000 in funding for graduate studies to students pursuing careers in public service. The scholarship is named after Harry S. Truman, the 33rd President of the United States.

UND President Andy Armacost and Provost Eric Link delivered the good news to Orne during a surprise announcement in class last week, according to a university press release. “A lot of people are going to meet Greyson and say, ‘We’re going to invest in this young man, and make sure he succeeds beyond his wildest dreams,’” said Mark Jendrysik, a Political Science Professor and Orne’s adviser.

Orne is the 15th student from UND to receive the Truman Scholarship. He is studying unmanned aircraft systems operations and political science and plans to focus on aviation policy as he pursues a law degree. “The scholarship will not only support my educational goals but also allow me to contribute more effectively to policy development in aviation,” Orne expressed.

The Truman Scholarship is awarded to students based on their leadership potential, academic excellence, and commitment to public service. With this award, recipients gain access to leadership training, career counseling, and special internship opportunities.

Orne’s accolades come during a competitive year, where applicants were evaluated based on their commitment to a career in government or the nonprofit sector. His selection highlights not only his personal achievements but also UND’s commitment to fostering future public service leaders.

“This recognition is a testament to Greyson’s hard work and dedication,” Jendrysik added. “I have no doubt he will make significant contributions to society.”
