University of Florida Recommends Santa J. Ono as President Finalist

Gainesville, Florida — The University of Florida Presidential Search Committee has recommended Dr. Santa J. Ono as the sole finalist to become the university’s 14th president. The committee made the unanimous decision during a meeting on May 4, 2025, citing Dr. Ono’s distinguished record in academia and public health.

Dr. Ono currently serves as president of the University of Michigan. Rahul Patel, Chair of the Presidential Search Committee, expressed pride in the recommendation, pointing out that Dr. Ono’s leadership aligns with UF’s ambitious goals. “We sought a leader who could match UF’s extraordinary momentum,” Patel said. “Dr. Ono’s proven record of academic excellence, innovation, and collaborative leadership made him our unanimous choice.”

A recognized researcher, Dr. Ono has made significant contributions to the fields of immunology and eye disease. He holds a Ph.D. in experimental medicine from McGill University and a B.A. in biological sciences from the University of Chicago. His accolades include elections to the National Academy of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ono has held several notable positions, including president of the University of British Columbia and the University of Cincinnati. He has also played leadership roles on various boards, including the American Council on Education and the Council on Competitiveness.

“Few moments in higher education are as exciting as this one at the University of Florida,” Dr. Ono stated. He expressed admiration for UF’s unique strengths and community support, highlighting the university’s potential to lead public higher education.

Dr. Ono is expected to visit the Gainesville campus on May 6, 2025, for public forums with students and faculty. Mori Hosseini, Chair of the UF Board of Trustees, emphasized the importance of this selection process. “This is a great day for the University of Florida,” Hosseini said, voicing support for Dr. Ono’s potential leadership.

Kent Fuchs, UF Interim President, shared his enthusiasm for Dr. Ono, calling him a “dream candidate” due to his successful track record and character. “The future of the University will be in the best of hands with Santa Ono as our leader,” Fuchs said.

The final decision rests with the University of Florida Board of Trustees and will require confirmation from the Florida Board of Governors.
