Vinay Prasad Fda Appointment News

WASHINGTON — Vinay Prasad has been named the new director of the Food and Drug Administration‘s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), responsible for regulating vaccines, gene therapies, and the blood supply. The announcement was made in a Tuesday email from FDA Commissioner Marty Makary to agency staff.

Prasad, a prominent academic and vocal critic of conventional medical practices, previously served as an epidemiology professor at the University of California at San Francisco. He has previously worked with the FDA and is known for his influential views on medical innovation and public health.

This appointment comes following the departure of former CBER director Peter Marks, who was dismissed by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in March. Following news of Prasad’s appointment, the S&P Biotech ETF saw a decline of over 5%, reflecting concerns within the biotech sector.

Prasad’s leadership is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the FDA as it navigates complex issues surrounding vaccine safety, emergency authorizations, and healthcare regulations. His stance on medical policies may influence how the agency approaches controversial medical products.

This decision has generated a mix of reactions among public health experts and the biotech industry, emphasizing the significant role the FDA plays in protecting public health.
