Zubeen Garg, Iconic Singer, Dies in Scuba Diving Accident at 52

SINGAPORE — Celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, best known for his hit song “Ya Ali,” died on September 19, 2025, following a freak scuba diving accident. He was 52 years old.
The accident occurred while Garg was in Singapore to perform at the North East Festival scheduled for September 20. Reports indicate that he fell into the sea during a diving activity and was subsequently rescued by local police.
Despite being rushed to an intensive care unit, medical staff were unable to revive him. His death has shocked fans and the Assamese community, leaving a significant void in India’s music industry.
Assam Cabinet Minister Ashok Singhal confirmed the news of Garg’s passing on social media, expressing his profound sadness. “Zubeen da was more than a singer; he was the pride of Assam and the nation,” Singhal wrote on X. “In his music, generations found joy, solace, and identity. His passing leaves behind a void that can never be filled.”
Tributes have been pouring in from across Assam and beyond. Former Rajya Sabha MP Ripu Bora shared his condolences, celebrating Garg’s impactful legacy. Actor Adil Hussain also expressed his sorrow, stating, “His contribution to Assamese music and culture is extraordinary… He will live amongst us through his songs.”
Born in 1972 in Meghalaya, Zubeen Garg, whose real name was Zubeen Borthakur, rose to fame in the 1990s. He gained nationwide recognition after the release of “Ya Ali” from the film “Gangster” in 2006. Throughout his career, he sang in various languages, including Assamese, Bengali, and Hindi, and was recognized as one of Assam’s highest-paid artists.
