Pope Leo XIV Inaugurated Amid Global Hope for Peace

VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV was officially inaugurated on Sunday during a Mass in St. Peter’s Square, attended by an estimated 200,000 people, including world leaders and dignitaries. The Mass marked the beginning of his pontificate, which started following his election on May 8, 2025.
The inaugural Mass commenced at 10 a.m. local time and opened with the presentation of the Fisherman’s Ring and the pallium, symbols of the papal office. Celebrating the diverse gathering, the pope’s first message focused on love, unity, and the quest for peace in areas of conflict.
Pope Leo XIV, a Chicago native and the first U.S. pontiff, drew attention to multiple crises around the world during his homily. He specifically urged action for peace in Ukraine and called for support for those suffering in Gaza. ‘Ukraine awaits negotiations for a just and lasting peace,’ he reminded the audience.
Following the Mass, Pope Leo XIV met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In a show of diplomatic goodwill, they discussed possible peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, highlighting the Vatican’s readiness to facilitate dialogue.
Emotional moments marked the day for the pope, particularly when he received the pallium—a white wool stole symbolizing his care for the Church—and the Fisherman’s Ring, traditionally worn by succeeding popes.
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle placed the Fisherman’s Ring on Leo’s finger, representing his role as the successor of St. Peter, the Church’s first leader. Meanwhile, prior to the Mass, he visited a nearby martyr’s tomb, reaffirming his connection to the roots of the Catholic faith.
Among the notable attendees was U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who expressed admiration for the significance of having a pope from the United States. Vance, alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio, led the U.S. delegation.
The crowd erupted in cheers when Leo emerged in his popemobile, waving to those who had gathered, adorned with flags from various countries. Leo’s ability to attract the global faithful reflects his intentions to serve as a unifying figure amidst ongoing strife worldwide.
The ceremony concluded with the pope’s blessing, invoking peace among all nations. As the bells of St. Peter’s rang, Leo XIV’s pontificate began with a clear message of open dialogue and calling for a global Church dedicated to love and inclusion.
