Cannon AFB Enters Lockdown Amid Active Shooter Alert in New Mexico

Clovis, New Mexico — Cannon Air Force Base issued an active shooter alert on Friday, prompting a lockdown of the base and nearby Chavez Housing. The alert was confirmed by Maj. Jackie Pienkowski at around 12:40 PM local time.
The alert sent to personnel stated: “Lockdown Lockdown Lockdown … Active Shooter … Cannon AFB and Chavez Housing Are On Lockdown. Seek Shelter Immediately.” Details surrounding the situation remain limited. Pienkowski noted that she would provide more information as it becomes available.
Curry County Sheriff Michael Brockett stated that there have been no requests for assistance at this time and could not offer additional details. The lockdown comes just days after a traffic incident caused road closures near the base.
Cannon AFB, located approximately 7 miles southwest of Clovis, spans 27,000 acres and is accessible via US Highway 60/84. It is situated on the high plains of eastern New Mexico, about 120 miles east of Albuquerque.
The shooter alert follows a recent incident where two trucks crashed along US 60-84, which caused significant road closures. No injuries were reported in that incident.
Maj. Pienkowski and local officials urge residents and personnel to stay vigilant and follow safety protocols during this uncertain time.
