Elon to Celebrate Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with Events

ELON, N.C. — The Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Diversity Education (CREDE) at Elon University will host a month-long series of events throughout April to celebrate Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. This initiative aims to acknowledge the diverse history and cultural significance of the Asian and Pacific Islander communities.
Elon’s observance occurs in April, in contrast to the national recognition in May, which commemorates the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States in 1843. This year’s theme, “bouquets,” symbolizes the unity and strength of various Asian and Pacific Islander groups who strive for a brighter future together.
“We hope that this year’s celebration of APIHM will not only foster a richer, deeper understanding and appreciation of the many cultures that comprise Asian and Pacific Islander heritage but also bring the whole Elon community together,” said George Dou, assistant director of CREDE.
The celebration kicks off with an annual event and features a special themed College Coffee, providing opportunities for community members to engage meaningfully. One key addition this year is the Southern Mix Exhibit: Asian Voices in the South, available for viewing from April 1 through April 21, showcasing narratives from the Asian diaspora in the U.S. South.
Events scheduled for every Monday in April from Noon to 2 p.m. at the CREDE in Moseley Hall will include casual conversations over tea. Each week will focus on a different theme, allowing attendees to connect in a comfortable setting.
Several key events are scheduled throughout the month:
- **April 1**: The Southern Mix traveling exhibit opens in Moseley 224.
- **April 3**: An annual celebration featuring diverse food, cultural performances, and local businesses will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Medallion Plaza.
- **April 8**: The CREDE will challenge participants to explore spicy foods from various Asian cultures during the Spicy Food Challenge from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at El Centro Kitchen.
