Fans of the iconic British musician, Paul Weller, were delighted by a recent revelation made by Line of Duty star, Vicky McClure, regarding Weller’s Welsh heritage. McClure, known for her role as DI Kate Fleming in the popular police drama, posed a question to Weller about his connection to Wales during an interview.
In her inquiry, McClure mentioned her partner, Jonny Owen, a broadcaster and documentary film director from Merthyr Tydfil, who believed that Weller had Welsh roots. This led to Weller confirming that his mother’s family hails from Merthyr and Aberdare, making him at least a quarter Welsh, much to the pride of both McClure and Owen.
Speculation about Weller’s ties to Wales initially arose during his headline performance at Cardiff Castle in 2015, where he shared with the team at Orchard Entertainment, the promoter of the event, that his maternal lineage can be traced back to Aberdare, revealing a long-standing connection to the region.
Moreover, Weller’s friendship with Kelly Jones, frontman of Stereophonics and a native of Cwmaman near Aberdare, adds another dimension to his fondness for Wales. The musician reminisced about visiting Aberdare in his youth and feeling a deep affinity with the country, attributing part of his musical talent to his Welsh ancestry.
Additionally, stories of the Weller family’s kind gestures towards the Welsh music scene have emerged over the years. For instance, Richard Parfitt, former frontman of 60ft Dolls, recalled a heartwarming encounter with Weller’s mother in Woking, Surrey, where she warmly welcomed Parfitt’s band, The Messengers, leading to a series of gigs supporting The Jam and kickstarting their musical journey.
As Weller celebrates his 66th birthday and the release of his new album, ’66’, the confirmation of his Welsh heritage adds an endearing layer to his illustrious career and personal identity, further solidifying his connection to Wales and its vibrant music culture.
