Ethereum Foundation Leadership Restructuring 2025

ZURICH, Switzerland — The Ethereum Foundation is undergoing a significant leadership restructuring aimed at enhancing technical expertise and improving communication within its ecosystem, co-founder Vitalik Buterin announced on Jan. 18, 2025. The changes, which have been in progress for nearly a year, are designed to bring in new talent, increase operational efficiency, and better support developers and users of the Ethereum blockchain.

“We are indeed currently in the process of large changes to EF leadership structure, which has been ongoing for close to a year. Some of this has already been executed on and made public, and some is still in progress,” Buterin stated. The restructuring focuses on reinforcing the foundation’s commitment to privacy, open-source development, and censorship resistance, while expanding the use of decentralized technologies for payments and treasury management.

Buterin emphasized that the foundation will not transform into a lobbying organization, particularly in major nations like the U.S., to maintain Ethereum’s neutrality as a global platform. “These things aren’t what EF does and this isn’t going to change. People seeking a different vision are welcome to start their own orgs,” he added.

The announcement follows the Ethereum Foundation’s recent return to social media with the launch of a new X (formerly Twitter) account, @ethereumfndn, on Jan. 15. The account aims to improve transparency by sharing updates on projects, grants, and treasury movements. This move comes amid criticism from community members, including the Aave team, who have called for leadership changes to address inefficiencies and funding concerns.

In addition to X, the foundation plans to engage with decentralized social media platforms like Farcaster, Lens, and Bluesky. The restructuring reflects the foundation’s broader strategy to adapt to the evolving needs of the Ethereum ecosystem while maintaining its core principles of decentralization and neutrality.
