Flamengo Looks to Repeat Lineup for First Time in Months

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — Flamengo manager Filipe Luís faces a rare opportunity to field the same starting lineup in consecutive matches when his team meets Vitória on Monday night at Maracanã Stadium. It will be the first time in five months that he can repeat a formation, a challenge made difficult due to injuries and suspensions.
Flamengo’s last consecutive lineup was used during the Campeonato Carioca finals against Fluminense on March 12 and March 16. The team won that title, but since then, Flamengo has played 35 matches, and Luís has been unable to maintain a consistent squad due to the constant changes.
The only confirmed absence for Monday’s match is midfielder Pulgar, who is recovering from foot surgery. All other key players are available, allowing for the potential for stability in the lineup. For the finals, Flamengo’s formation included Rossi; Wesley, Ortiz, Léo Pereira, Alex Sandro; Pulgar, De la Cruz, Arrascaeta; Gerson, Luiz Araújo, and Plata.
The backline has been least affected, with Léo Ortiz and Léo Pereira playing together for 23 matches. However, overall, the team has experienced significant changes, with Wesley and Gerson leaving the club, while Alex Sandro and De la Cruz have dealt with injuries. Pulgar’s surgery and Luiz Araújo’s fatigue have also created challenges, alongside suspensions affecting other players.
With players returning from injury and new signings arriving, Luís has more options available. He will now manage a larger squad, which offers the flexibility to balance training and match loads.
Monday’s match against Vitória kicks off at 9 PM local time, and Flamengo, currently leading the Brasileirão, has a game in hand. The team hopes to continue its strong performance while building continuity in the lineup.
