Lane County Vaccine Distribution

EUGENE, Ore. — Lane County health clinics are struggling with delays in vaccine distribution as flu season begins. Federal guidance changes and delays have left clinics waiting for both flu and COVID-19 vaccines.

The Health Clinics of Lane County have not yet received seasonal flu shots, which is concerning as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) predicts a challenging winter ahead with high hospitalization rates due to respiratory illnesses. Jonathan Modie, spokesperson for the Oregon Health Authority, explained how the disruptions may stem from recent changes in vaccine recommendations by the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP).

On October 6, acting CDC director Jim O'Neill signed off on new guidelines, which could allow states to receive doses through the Vaccines for Children program. This program provides vaccines to children from low-income families. Nearly 30,000 individuals receiving Medicaid are cared for by the county’s health clinics, which operate from Cottage Grove to Eugene.

Though flu vaccine delivery is expected by the end of October, there is no set date for the arrival of COVID-19 shots. Modie stated, “The Oregon Health Authority is working with Lane County Public Health to ensure there are enough vaccines for residents.”

Many local physicians are assisting patients by writing prescriptions for vaccines available at pharmacies, even as some pharmacies hesitate to fill these prescriptions due to uncertainty about their necessity. Mixed reports have surfaced regarding accessibility at stores; while some patients have faced obstacles, others report successful vaccinations.

Other healthcare providers, such as PeaceHealth and Oregon Medical Group, have begun receiving vaccine supplies. PeaceHealth will offer flu shots to both pediatric and adult patients, while planning to administer COVID-19 vaccines to children once they arrive. Oregon Medical Group is prepared to give both flu and COVID-19 vaccinations to all patients.
