WASHINGTON – Howard University has been selected as one of the launch sites for the United Negro College Fund’s Project ACCLAIM (Accelerating Learning in Asset Investment Management). This initiative is designed to create a strong pipeline of students from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) entering the financial services sector.

Project ACCLAIM will officially launch at Howard University and Morehouse College in the fall of 2025. The program is backed by a significant $10 million donation from Adage Capital Management, along with contributions from Elizabeth and Phill Gross.

“Investing in the next generation of leaders is essential to the long-term health of the finance industry,” noted Phill Gross, co-founder and managing director of Adage Capital Management. He emphasized that HBCUs are well-suited to strengthen career pathways in the financial services industry.

The project aims to provide HBCU students with a comprehensive undergraduate experience in investment management. This will involve rigorous coursework, hands-on experience, and co-curricular activities, ultimately enhancing finance and investing curricula at HBCUs. Additionally, it will foster collaboration among faculty and establish a centralized investment fund managed by students.

“HBCUs play a critical role in producing talented and diverse professionals,” stated Anthony D. Wilbon, Ph.D., dean of the Howard University School of Business. He expressed optimism about the program’s potential to prepare students for successful careers following graduation.

A dedicated team comprising faculty, industry experts, and program leaders will focus on developing a robust curriculum tailored specifically for HBCU students. They will also establish partnerships with key financial firms to facilitate internships and mentorships.

“By cultivating a robust pipeline of Black talent in the financial services industry, this transformative initiative will play a critical role in closing the wealth gap for African Americans,” explained Michael L. Lomax, Ph.D., president and CEO of UNCF.

UNCF envisions expanding Project ACCLAIM to incorporate additional HBCUs and cities in the future. This expansion aims to diversify the financial services industry and foster institutional wealth-building activities that significantly benefit the communities served by these institutions.
