India’s Engagement with Myanmar’s Political Landscape: A Decade of Relations
Over the past ten years, India has demonstrated a consistent willingness to engage with Myanmar, regardless of the political climate in Naypyidaw. This strategic approach, spearheaded by Indian president Ram Nath Kovind and prime minister Narendra Modi, has navigated shifts in power within Myanmar, including the recent military coup.
In November 2014, Modi’s ‘Act East Policy’ solidified India’s commitment to enhancing relations with Southeast Asia. The announcement, made during the 12th India-ASEAN Summit in the capital city of Naypyidaw, signified a pivotal moment in India’s foreign policy towards the region.
While India has been slow to acknowledge the limitations of Myanmar’s military regime in safeguarding its interests, the country’s overarching goal of promoting economic development and trade in the region has remained steadfast.
The nuanced engagement with Myanmar underscores India’s recognition of the country’s significance in shaping regional dynamics, particularly in the context of evolving geopolitical interests.
