Jeff Bridges on ‘The Old Man’ Season 3: Uncertain Future and Cliffhanger Ending
The second season of FX‘s action-thriller series ‘The Old Man,’ starring Jeff Bridges, has concluded with a dramatic and cliffhanger finale, leaving fans and the cast itself uncertain about the future of the show. In an interview with Variety, Bridges discussed the recent season and the potential for a third season, emphasizing that the decision is still pending and dependent on the network’s approval.
Season 2 of ‘The Old Man’ revolved around the rescue of Angela/Emily (Alia Shawkat), a mission that required Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) and his former partner-turned-rival Harold Harper (John Lithgow) to put aside their differences and travel to Afghanistan. During this journey, Emily discovered her real father was Faraz Hamzad (Navid Negahban) and embraced her new identity as Parwana Hamzad.
The season ended with a significant power dynamic shift, as Parwana Hamzad tells Chase that he will be helping her rescue Harper, who had partnered with his ex-wife to ensure her safe return to America but subsequently disappeared. This ending sets up a compelling premise for a potential third season, with Chase begrudgingly partnering with Parwana, similar to how he teamed up with Harper in the previous season.
Bridges and the show’s executive producer, Jonathan E. Steinberg, expressed optimism about the possibility of a third season, although nothing is guaranteed at this stage. The success of the second season, particularly its streaming figures, is expected to play a crucial role in the network’s decision. Bridges mentioned that he has signed on for three seasons and is enthusiastic about the direction of the story.
The cliffhanger ending and the complex relationships between the characters, especially the evolving dynamic between Chase and Parwana, provide ample material for further storytelling. Steinberg highlighted that the team is already building the narrative for a potential third season, focusing on more complicated themes beyond simply “killing bad guys”.
