Johnston County Public Schools Excel in Academic Performance and Innovative Programs
Johnston County Public Schools (JCPS) in North Carolina have demonstrated significant academic achievements and innovative program implementations. As of the 2023-2024 school year, 23 schools within the district ranked in the top 20% for academic growth in North Carolina, highlighting the district’s commitment to educational excellence.
JCPS is one of only 12 districts in the state that have exceeded pre-pandemic achievement levels, a testament to the district’s resilience and dedication to student success. The graduation rate stands at an impressive 91.3%, with nearly 38,000 students enrolled, making it one of the largest school districts in the state.
The district offers several unique programs aimed at preparing students for higher education and career readiness. The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program, available from kindergarten through postsecondary education, focuses on closing the opportunity gap by preparing students for college and success in a global society. Another notable program is the JoCo TEACH Academy, a collaboration with Johnston Community College and N.C. State University, which provides a dual enrollment program leading to an Associate Degree in Teaching.
JCPS also boasts the Career and College Promise (CCP) program, allowing high school students to pursue college courses tuition-free. Additionally, the Career and Technical Leadership Academy (CTLA) and the Johnston County Early College Academy offer students the opportunity to earn associate degrees while completing high school requirements.
In terms of student support, JCPS ensures that students have access to healthy and delicious meal options, with nearly 4.5 million meals served in the last school year. The district’s transportation system safely transports nearly 25,000 students daily, covering a combined total of 32,000 miles each day.
