Martha Plimpton Reflects on ‘The Goonies,’ Prefers Other Roles

NEW YORK, NY — Martha Plimpton, best known for her role in the 1985 classic film “The Goonies,” revealed in a recent interview that she has little interest in revisiting the movie 40 years after its release.
In an interview published on September 2, Plimpton, 54, stated, “Nope. I don’t watch it. I’ve seen it once, and that’s good.” Her candid response came during a discussion about her recent projects.
While the actress has no desire to rewatch “The Goonies,” she expressed fondness for another film from her past. “A few months ago I was curious to watch ‘Parenthood,’ and I did,” she said, referring to the 1989 dramedy that featured other notable actors, including Steve Martin and Joaquin Phoenix. “That’s a really lovely movie,” she noted.
Despite her reluctance to revisit “The Goonies,” Plimpton recently reunited with her former co-stars at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C. The reunion occurred in April and included fellow cast members Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Robert Davi, and Joe Pantoliano.
During the panel, the cast discussed their enthusiasm for a potential “Goonies” sequel. Plimpton shared, “I think [fans are] going to see ‘The Goonies 2,’ whether we’re in it or not. I think that’s pretty obvious. At least, I hope [they] will.” Feldman echoed her sentiments, expressing excitement over the possibility and stating, “We love that Steven Spielberg is engaged and back in the ‘Goonies’ mindset, so that’s exciting for all of us.”
However, their comments on a sequel came as a surprise as both had previously downplayed the idea just months earlier. Feldman warned fans via social media that there was no official script or production details confirmed for a sequel.
The original “Goonies,” directed by Richard Donner, has maintained its status as a cult classic over the years, earning $125 million at the global box office and captivating audiences with its adventurous plot about kids in Astoria, Oregon.
As for Plimpton, she continues to pursue new projects. She is starring in the new HBO series “Task,” which premieres on September 7. In it, she portrays Kathleen McGinty, a career FBI agent.
Plimpton’s reflections on her past projects demonstrate her evolving career and preferences in film.
