REDMOND, Wash. — Microsoft has announced a significant revamp of its Xbox Game Pass subscription service, introducing three new tiers: Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. Starting today, Game Pass Ultimate will rise from $19.99 to $29.99 per month in the U.S., reflecting a 50% increase.

This change comes just over a year after a previous price hike in July 2024, prompting concerns among gamers regarding the sustainability of the Game Pass model. Essential, which replaces Game Pass Core, remains at $9.99 per month, while the new Premium tier maintains the $14.99 price point, with subscribers upgraded from the Standard plan.

Microsoft states that the Ultimate plan will now include over 75 day-one game releases annually, expanding gamer access to titles such as Hornet and COD: Black Ops 7. The service also introduces bundled perks, including Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics.

“We designed these plans to meet players where they are, allowing them more flexibility and value,” said a Microsoft spokesperson. Ultimate subscribers will gain improved cloud gaming capabilities, featuring enhanced streaming quality up to 1440p.

In addition to new gaming experiences, Premium subscribers will have access to over 200 games, including popular titles like Diablo IV and Hogwarts Legacy, alongside added in-game benefits. Essential subscribers can now enjoy a curated catalog of more than 50 games playable on both console and PC.

Despite recent changes, reactions within the gaming community are mixed. Some critics argue that the subscription model is unsustainable, suggesting it could create “weird inner tensions” in the industry. Nevertheless, Microsoft is adamant that creator participation and player engagement are at an all-time high with Game Pass.

The company encourages players to visit their plan picker for full details on features and pricing, as these adjustments are now effective across all Xbox platforms.
