Monique Hoyt is a pivotal figure in the true crime story depicted in the Netflix film ‘Woman of the Hour,’ directed by Anna Kendrick. Hoyt was one of the survivors of serial killer Rodney Alcala‘s brutal attacks and played a crucial role in his eventual capture and conviction.

In 1979, Hoyt was a victim of Alcala’s violence, but she managed to escape and report him to the police. Her bravery led to Alcala’s arrest in February 1979, although he was later released on bail and continued his murderous spree until his final arrest in July 1979 following the murder of 12-year-old Robin Samsoe.

Hoyt’s testimony was instrumental in the trial of Rodney Alcala. The film ‘Woman of the Hour’ features a character named Amy, played by Autumn Best, who is an amalgamation of several of Alcala’s victims, with her character most closely based on Monique Hoyt. The film highlights how Hoyt’s quick thinking and courage helped in bringing Alcala to justice.

Alcala, known as “The Dating Game Killer” due to his appearance on the 1978 episode of ‘The Dating Game,’ was eventually found guilty of seven murders, although it is believed he may have committed many more. His crimes were marked by their brutality and the fact that he was able to charm his way into the lives of his victims, including his appearance on a popular game show.

Hoyt’s story serves as a testament to the resilience and bravery of the survivors of Alcala’s crimes and underscores the importance of their testimonies in ensuring justice is served.
