Monitor Audio has introduced its latest creation, the Studio 89 loudspeakers, marking a significant moment in the company’s 50-year history. The announcement came from Kevro International, the North American distributor for Monitor Audio, revealing that the new speakers are priced at $2,499 per pair. The Studio 89 is described as a spiritual successor to the esteemed Monitor Audio Studio 15, originally launched in 1989, which had garnered much admiration for bringing studio-grade sound into household settings.

Unlike recent trends in the speaker market that favor retro designs, as seen with brands like JBL, Wharfedale, and PSB, Monitor Audio has opted for a modern aesthetic. The Studio 89 adheres to a black high-gloss finish with gold anodized drivers reminiscent of the original Studio 15. Despite its compact size, the speaker incorporates cutting-edge engineering derived from Monitor Audio’s Hyphn and Platinum Series 3G speakers.

“Launched in 1989, the original Studio Series was a turning point for Monitor Audio,” stated Charles Minett, Product Design Director of Monitor Audio. “It incorporated our key technologies of metal dome tweeters and metal cone drivers. We wanted to celebrate its legacy with a forward-looking design.”

The innovations include a third-generation MPD tweeter, capable of delivering high-frequency responses up to 60kHz, a considerable improvement over conventional AMT tweeters. The technology promises enhanced sound dispersion while maintaining low distortion levels. It is crafted using Monitor Audio’s RDT, with drivers made from three layers to ensure strength and minimal weight, utilizing materials like C-CAM and woven carbon fiber.

Michael Hedges, Technical Director of Monitor Audio, highlighted the advancements, saying, “We’ve found new ways to improve loudspeakers. The Studio 89 incorporates these technologies, resulting in a magical speaker experience.”

The structural design of the Studio 89 is notable for its robust cabinet construction, featuring an 18mm front baffle and strategically placed internal walls for additional reinforcement. These elements work together to enhance airflow and reduce turbulence through dual slot-style ports utilizing Hive II technology. The mechanical parts are meticulously engineered to maintain optimal signal transfer and minimize distortion, ensuring a seamless auditory experience.

For an additional cost of $749 per pair, customers can purchase dedicated stands designed specifically for the Studio 89. These stands are built from various materials, each selected for optimal rigidity, enhancing the listening experience.

The quality of sound produced by the Studio 89 has been praised for its natural fidelity and precise bass response. Simon Lucas from Stereonet described the speaker as “subtle and detailed yet charming and engaging,” noting its potential to attract a broad range of audiophiles.
