A tragic incident unfolded in Mumbai as a 19-year-old boy, Prathamesh Bhokse, lost his life after consuming chicken shawarma from a local roadside food vendor in the vicinity of Maharashtra Nagar. The incident, which took place in Trombay, led to the subsequent arrest of two shopkeepers identified as Anand Kamble and Mohammad Ahmed Raiza Shaikh.

According to Senior Inspector Rajesh Shinde, Bhokse and his uncle, Hameed Abbas Syed, partook in the shawarma on May 3, which eventually triggered severe stomach pain and vomiting. Despite seeking immediate medical attention at a municipal hospital, Bhokse’s conditioned worsened. Consequently, he was transferred to KEM Hospital on May 5 where he succumbed to his condition.

Regrettably, this is not an isolated incident. In the past, several cases of food poisoning related to shawarma consumption have surfaced around India. In Kochi, a young man met a similar fate after eating shawarma from a restaurant in Mavelipuram, Kerala. Devananda, a 16-year-old girl in Cheruvathur, lost her life due to food poisoning, underlining the severity of detrimental food-induced diseases.

Not just in Kerala, but the reach of such incidents expanded to Namakkal in Tamil Nadu, where a fourteen-year-old girl and numerous others fell ill after consuming chicken shawarma. These occurrences serve as stark reminders of the underlying food safety risks associated with popular Middle Eastern cuisine.
