Residents of Mumbai were greeted with the season’s first rainfall on May 13, along with a notable sandstorm that swept through the Maximum City, offering a relief from the scorching heat wave that had prevailed for days.

The sudden change in weather has caused a stir on social media platforms, with many users sharing images and videos capturing the uncommon sandstorm and rain engulfing Mumbai.

One of the first entities to join the meme trend was Yash Raj Films, which humorously remarked, ‘You know you’re in Mumbai when you need an umbrella and sunglasses on the same day!’ while sharing a clip from the movie ‘Tashan’.

Following suit, numerous other individuals and organizations have jumped on the bandwagon, contributing to the ongoing meme fest.

Mumbai, along with Thane and other nearby areas in Maharashtra, witnessed the showers. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has anticipated lightning and strong winds of 30-40 km per hour in certain regions, prompting a ‘Yellow’ alert for districts such as Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg.

An IMD press release highlighted, ‘Hailstorm activity has been observed in isolated places over regions including Jammu-Kashmir, Uttarakhand, West Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, Telangana, and Madhya Maharashtra in the last 24 hours till Monday, 8:30 AM.’

The weather conditions led to disruptions in local train and metro services in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) as rains and gusty winds impacted parts of the city as well as Thane, Kalyan, and Palghar.

Moreover, flights at Mumbai International Airport were temporarily halted due to heavy rain and dust storms, causing Indigo to alert passengers about potential air traffic congestion in Mumbai and advising them to stay updated on their flight statuses.
