NEW YORK CITY — New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced he is ending his reelection campaign, a development anticipated by many of his rivals. In a video posted to X, Adams cited ongoing media speculation and a lack of campaign funds as reasons for his decision.

“Despite all we’ve achieved, I cannot continue my reelection campaign,” Adams said. He expressed pride in his administration’s efforts to support marginalized communities but acknowledged that recent challenges had undermined his ability to campaign effectively.

The announcement adds complexity to a unique mayoral primary. Adams was trailing in polls behind Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Mamdani, a democratic socialist, won the Democratic primary in June against Cuomo, who has pressured Adams to withdraw to unify opposition against Mamdani.

President Donald Trump, also involved in the political dynamics, has suggested that the field should narrow. Trump’s ally, Steve Witkoff, met with Adams regarding potential roles in the Trump administration, further complicating the race.

Adams’ decision to drop out follows a series of scandals impacting his administration. He faces corruption allegations and was denied public matching funds necessary for his campaign by the city’s Campaign Finance Board, which cited issues with his donor disclosures.

Previously, Adams surged to victory in 2021, positioning himself as a champion for working-class New Yorkers. However, his tenure has been marred by ongoing issues and scandals among his close advisors.

As Democrats unite behind Mamdani, with endorsements from figures like New York Governor Kathy Hochul and former Vice President Kamala Harris, the pressure on Adams has intensified. In the weeks leading to his withdrawal, he publicly criticized the media for complicating his campaign efforts with negative portrayals.

Adams had previously indicated he would run as an independent in the general election, and speculation regarding his potential political future continues.

In a broader perspective, Trump’s involvement in the mayoral race and his comments about Mamdani reflect a unique intersection of local and national politics. As the election approaches, the shifting alliances and endorsements will likely shape New York City’s political landscape.
