Opcw Director General Addresses Recent Chemical Weapons Threats At Executive Council Meeting

At the latest Executive Council meeting of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the Director General highlighted the ongoing threat posed by chemical weapons, referencing recent incidents involving prominent figures like Alexei Navalny. The use of Novichok nerve agent in attacks such as those in Salisbury, which resulted in casualties like Dawn Sturgess in Amesbury, underscored the need for continued vigilance.

With a focus on addressing major concerns related to chemical weapons, the Director General commended the OPCW’s efforts in investigating attacks and attributing responsibility. Notably, the report from the Investigation and Identification Team (IIT) shed light on cases involving Daesh in Syria, adding to the body of evidence regarding chemical weapon use by various actors.

Regarding Russia‘s actions in both the poisoning of Navalny and the invasion of Ukraine, the Director General expressed strong condemnation. The use of riot control agents by Russian forces in the context of the conflict further raised alarms about non-compliance with international norms.

Recognizing the critical role of the OPCW in countering chemical threats, the Director General urged all States Parties to uphold the decisions made at the Conference of States Parties. These decisions, aimed at mitigating risks and enhancing security, are seen as vital steps in safeguarding against future instances of chemical weapon use.

As the international community grapples with the complex challenges of disarmament and non-proliferation, the OPCW’s work remains central to maintaining a world free from chemical weapons. With ongoing investigations and initiatives, the Organisation continues to play a crucial role in upholding the Chemical Weapons Convention and promoting global security.
