Patti LuPone Shines as Glinda in ‘Agatha All Along’: Exclusive Insights and Upcoming Performances
Patti LuPone is garnering significant attention for her powerful performance as Lilia Calderu, a divination witch, in the Disney+ series ‘Agatha All Along‘. In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, LuPone discussed her role, particularly the pivotal moment involving a sigil in episode 6, titled “Familiar by Thy Side”. The sigil, which was placed by Lilia, had a profound impact on the storyline, including an identity-masking spell on Billy Kaplan, played by Joe Locke.
Lupone revealed that she had forgotten about the sigil scene until the wig master and prop master reminded her. This oversight highlights the complexity and depth of the show’s narrative, which is praised for its clever puzzle-laying by showrunner Jac Schaeffer. In the upcoming episode 7, Lilia’s powers will be central as she participates in the divination trial of the Witches’ Road, where she will be dressed as Glinda from ‘The Wizard of Oz‘.
The episode promises to be a standout, with the remaining coven members dressed as iconic movie witches. LuPone expressed her delight in playing Glinda, noting that it wasn’t a stretch for her despite her typical typecasting in musical theater. She highlighted her comedic roots, mentioning her early Tony nomination for a slapstick comedy role in ‘As You Like It‘.
Beyond her work on ‘Agatha All Along’, LuPone is also currently performing on stage in the revival of ‘Company‘. Her upcoming concert, ‘Songs From a Hat’, is scheduled for March 17, 2025, at the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre at Symphony Space, where she will perform a 90-minute set.
Co-stars and fans alike have praised LuPone’s performance, with Kathryn Hahn describing the moment of seeing LuPone as Glinda as “breathless” and “a childhood dream come true”.
